Geno had a vision where kids and community members would have access to outdoor courts that they could play on day or night. We are taking that vision and making it our primary mission. We are starting out with his hometown courts of Redway, CA and Hollister, CA. We will continue this mission to other communities in Northern CA and beyond.
By working with the Southern Humboldt Unified School District and local businesses to restore the outdoor basketball courts at Redway Elementary School for the youth and community, we get to keep Geno’s name, spirit, and energy alive with something tangible. The Redway courts were where Gene first learned to play basketball. Those were the courts where he fostered his skill set and cultivated his innate love for the game to become the player that he did. There could be no more fitting tribute than to revive the place where it all began for Geno and give the gift of hoop to a whole new generation.
Every year since his tragic passing, the Live Like Geno Foundation has sponsored the Play Like Geno 3-on-3 basketball tournament for youth and adults. The local community has made these events a success and triumphant fundraiser for the Redway Court Revival Project. Currently the courts have been resurfaced and lined, installed with a set of brand new hoops, and the foundation’s logo will soon be stenciled on. There are future plans to install memorial benches as well as celebrate with a proper grand opening in the Spring of 2020. This is Gene’s legacy. It will live on in the Redway Courts, the Hollister Courts, and soon others that will have Geno’s stamp on them for many years to come.
We are excited to announce our First Opening was in July of 2019 at McCarthy Park. We worked in conjunction with Hollister Recreation Department and the City of Hollister to offer the community a place to shoot some hoops. Our mission is to spread the love of hoop and we are thrilled that we were able to partner with so many community members to make our first court happen.
If you build it they will come!
Special thanks to LJ Gagnier of BSN Sports and Hollister Paint Company.
We want everyone to Make A Swish and you can’t do that without a proper net. We would like to outfit your school’s or your community basketball hoops with new nets at no cost. This is our way of giving back and Building UP your community courts. Fill out the form below and we will provide nets as we are able. Our goal is to offer this to at least two schools/community courts a month.
Thank you to LJ Gagnier and John Gillette of BSN Sports
for donating the first 100 nets! Mission UP!
